Each year’s class of honorees is selected by a committee that includes members of YLC’s Board of Directors and past YLC Role Model Award recipients. The committee reviews all nominations before selecting a final list of individuals. Honorees are selected based on significant contributions to their field of work and New Orleans as a whole. Notably, a person can only receive the honor of YLC Role Model once in his or her lifetime.

“YLC's Role Model program celebrates the efforts of local leaders making critical contributions to the community,” said Liz Waller, Vice President of Leadership for YLC, “They serve as exemplary icons for future generations. Nominating someone is an opportunity to recognize and appreciate a changemaker for their meaningful work.”

YLC takes the time each year to assemble a committee consisting of YLC members, Board of Directors, Alumni, and past Role Model Award recipients. After careful consideration, the honorees are chosen based on significant contributions to their field of work and New Orleans. Notably, a person can only receive the honor of YLC Role Model once in their lifetime.

The YLC Role Model Awards program expanded in 2023 into a full spectrum leadership development and learning program where young professionals engage with and learn key skills from the esteemed class. Through the Role Model Series, honorees are invited to participate in YLC events throughout the year to share their skills, passions, and successes with YLC members.

The Role Model Awards Evening has evolved over the years, first beginning as a gala and shifting during the pandemic. Today, the YLC Role Model Awards is a full spectrum leadership development and learning program where young professionals can engage with and learn key skills from the honoree class. YLC leaders host a number of events with the Role Models leading up to the Awards Evening.
“We’ve learned everything from the strategy and science behind the Louisiana Children’s Museum to how to better engage teams,” said Katie Neeb 2024 Role Model Co-Chair. “It’s been really insightful and interesting hearing from community leaders who have done so much and have a wealth of knowledge to share with a young professional like myself. We’re looking forward to not only celebrating the Role Models and the contributions they have made in their specific field, but continuing to gain insight from them.”
Annually since 1986, YLC has selected a distinguished class of leaders that have shaped the city of New Orleans with their passionate and dedicated efforts. A person can only receive the honor of YLC Role Model once in their lifetime.

“Role Models are noted for promoting a positive attitude and an unyielding desire to enhance the quality of life in New Orleans,” said Morgan England, 2024 Co-Chair of the Role Model Awards Evening. “It’s someone who’s an admirable inspiration to young talent and someone we all want to rally behind because they’re working toward the future success of everyone in the community.”

YLC Role Model nominations happen annually with an application/call to submit a Role Model nomination in the winter. The public can nominate anyone to be considered for a Role Model class. To be considered, a nominee cannot have already been honored as a Role Model in previous years.

Hotard is expected to begin her leadership in December.

"YLC has made a significant impact on the lives of countless New Orleanians, and I am no exception. My experience as a participant in YLC’s Leadership Development Series was transformative. During a time when I felt adrift, the organization was a beacon, guiding me toward a meaningful purpose, nurturing my leadership skills, and encouraging my commitment to serve this community. I eagerly embrace the next steps of collaborating with the Board, our members, and fellow alumni to ensure YLC's continued success in providing valuable services to our beloved city and maximizing our collective impact for years to come."

Young Leadership Council (YLC) is proud to call New Orleans home. A center of culture, creativity, and innovation, New Orleans packs a whole lot of personality into a diverse, dynamic, and energizing hub. And we are determined to keep it that way.

A clean, safe, and beautiful New Orleans is one where our members are excited to live, work, and raise a family. A clean, safe, and beautiful New Orleans is one where out-of-state young professionals want to move and locals want to stay.

YLC is a community of passionate young professionals working to ensure New Orleans is a place we will always be proud to call home. YLC’s Board, led by Board President Andrew Koehler, has chosen to focus the organization’s strategic efforts in 2022 around this theme.

YLC is composed of early to mid-career adults (ages 21-42) interested in developing their leadership skills while bettering their community. The organization achieves its mission through leadership training, hands-on experience in volunteer-led community projects, and the amplification of community leaders. The annual class of Role Models and Board of Directors both play a critical role in accomplishing the organization’s mission while building a more equitable, inclusive New Orleans.

Board member and Role Model Awards Co-Chair, Olivia Mertensmeyer said, “The skills and lessons I’ve learned as a board member are invaluable, and this year, I am excited to be in a leadership role for the Role Model program. The Role Models are individuals that we, as young leaders, can inspire to become, and YLC helps us become them for the next generation. Become a board member this year, and be a role model in the future!”

For over 35 years, YLC has been proud to honor EXTRAordinary individuals making a positive impact in the Greater New Orleans region. YLC’s Role Model Awards celebrate the efforts of local leaders who make critical contributions to the community and serve as exemplary icons for future generations. It’s an opportunity for these changemakers to be appreciated for their meaningful work and achievements while providing inspirational examples for YLC members seeking to leave their own mark on New Orleans.

Each year’s class of honorees is selected by a committee including members of YLC’s Board of Directors and past YLC Role Model Award recipients. Honorees are chosen based on significant contributions to their field of work and New Orleans. Notably, a person can only receive the honor of YLC Role Model once in their lifetime.
While YLC’s Role Models are a beacon of inspiration, YLC’s Board of Directors plays a vital role in the day-to-day success of the organization. Like a traditional non profit board, YLC’s 24-person board provides oversight and governance to the organization. Uniquely, YLC’s Board of Directors is also a pivotal piece in fulfilling its mission to train the future leaders of New Orleans. With 83.1% of board members in the U.S. over 40 years old (compared to just 61% of the general population) (The NonProfit Times, 2018), YLC offers a rare opportunity for young people to invest in their community via board service.

YLC’s board is a diverse body of individuals carefully chosen for their varying backgrounds and unique skill sets. Their purpose is to ensure the organization is on track with regard to meeting its goals, as well as to craft policies in support of those goals. They’re vital for the health and well-being of the organization and ensuring YLC continues to deliver a beneficial impact in the Greater New Orleans region.
